The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexandria, Egypt's ancient port city, has long inspired storytellers and dreamers. La Fumée Alexandrie captures that spirit in a bottle, released in 2015 as a fruity, floral, smoky composition that carries the memory of temple smoke and market stalls into a modern sensory experience. Rose, oud, incense, and mandarin interweave to create something that feels both timeless and wearable. The opening burst of mandarin brings immediate brightness, while the rose softens the composition with lush floral warmth. Beneath this, oud and incense add depth and mystery, creating a smoky undertone that lingers. Together these materials form a fragrance that evokes the romance of ancient trade routes and ceremonial spaces, without pretending to be a history lesson.
The rose here isn't a soapdish rose. Turkish damask rose absolute gives it a fruity, almost wine-dark character, less floral, more resinous. The incense absolute isn't churchy or medicinal; it reads as warm air rising from hot stone, threaded through the heart alongside geranium's green clarity. Egyptian cumin adds a savory edge that sits between spice and earth, giving the composition an aromatic complexity that rewards attention. Oud and papyrus anchor the base with a paper-dust quality that's unusual, not sweet, not animal, just dry and present. Each layer earns its place.
The evolution
The lychee and mandarin arrive first, a brief, bright sweetness that sets a sparkling opening. Then the rose asserts itself, joined immediately by incense smoke. Together they form the fragrance's dominant character: floral and smoky, warm and slightly tart. The interplay between the fruity top notes and the smoky heart creates an intriguing tension that keeps the wearer engaged. As the fragrance develops, the rose deepens, its petals taking on a richer, almost jam-like quality as the incense smoke weaves through it. The drydown is where La Fumée Alexandrie earns its name. The oud deepens, almost tar-like in its resinous intensity, while papyrus adds a dusty, paper quality that grounds the composition. Birch smoke and amber complete the picture, a warm, resinous trail that stays close to the skin for hours, evolving slowly and revealing new facets with each passing moment.
Cultural impact
Miller Harris treats perfume as storytelling. The house approaches fragrance creation with a commitment to artistic vision, creating scents that read like chapters in a larger narrative. La Fumée Alexandrie continues the La Fumée series, exploring incense traditions through a contemporary lens. Each fragrance in the collection represents an exploration of aromatic materials, building on the legacy of smoky, resinous compositions that have become a signature for the brand. The collection invites wearers to discover new dimensions of familiar materials, reimagining traditional incense notes through a modern sensibility.
