The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pour Lui Time Out arrived in 2015 as a flanker to the 2012 Mauboussin Pour Lui. The name says it all, a time out from the ordinary, a portable vacation in a 100 ml bottle. The composition centers on blackcurrant and citrus in the opening, with nutmeg adding warmth and spice. The blend was designed to offer something different from the typical aromatic fragrances of its era, balancing tart fruit notes with a clean, accessible profile that reads well across different settings and seasons.
Blackcurrant in the opening isn't standard, its tart, slightly jammy character adds depth to the citrus foundation. Nutmeg provides just enough spice to keep the lemon from feeling flat, creating a more textured experience than a straightforward aquatic would offer. The combination of fruit and spice in the top notes sets an unexpected tone, one that feels deliberate rather than accidental. This careful balance continues into the heart, where herbal and marine elements take over without fully erasing the initial fruity impression.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, blackcurrant leading with lemon and nutmeg filling in the gaps. It's fruity without being sweet, sharp without being harsh. The sea notes arrive with lavender and sage threading through like coastal herbs, adding an herbal dimension that rounds out the fruit. The drydown is where it earns its name. Guaiac wood, patchouli, and labdanum settle warm against the skin, giving the fragrance a woody, slightly smoky base that lingers. The overall effect is a fragrance that moves from bright and tart through a cool herbal middle into a warm, resinous finish, each stage distinct but connected.
Cultural impact
Time Out draws comparisons to Kenzo pour Homme and Versace Man Eau Fraîche, sitting in similar territory with its aquatic and citrus-forward composition. The blackcurrant note in the opening gives it a distinctive character, a fruity tartness that sets it apart from the straightforward citrus or marine profiles of similar releases. It's a fragrance that works well in warmer months without feeling out of place during cooler seasons, versatile enough for casual wear while maintaining enough complexity to hold attention.
