The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Florian Gallo and Sara Cartier designed Caviar Addiction in 2022 for Mauboussin, a lineup built on desire made tangible. The ozonic top note arrives with an ionized, almost metallic clarity that announces itself sharply, a cold brightness that feels like ionized air before a storm. This initial shock softens as the fragrance develops, revealing something more intimate and close to the skin. Animalic notes and musk form the quiet backbone beneath, a warm, textured depth that outlasts everything else. As the opening settles, the aldehydic shimmer adds a clean lift that keeps the top notes from being purely mineral, while the briny quality becomes more pronounced, coating the palate with that distinctive sea-mineral sensation.
The ozonic-caviar-musky triad is uncommon in mainstream perfumery. By pairing ozonic brightness with animalic depth and grounding both in musk, the perfumers created an accord that reads differently on every wearer. Some detect the mineral cold-water quality more strongly, while others notice the aldehyde shimmer alongside the warm skin quality underneath. The caviar note itself doesn't smell like the actual product; it captures a briny, textured, slightly metallic quality that coats the palate.
The evolution
The opening announces itself like lightning over open water, a sharp, ozonic charge that crackles for the first few minutes before the aldehydes arrive to soften it into something almost creamy. The transition into the heart is subtle. The caviar note doesn't arrive so much as it reveals itself, settling into the composition like a secret rather than a statement. Briny, mineral, textured, it stays close to the skin rather than projecting outward. By the drydown, the animalic quality has fully emerged, warm and intimate, wrapped in soft musk that makes this feel less like perfume and more like skin. The ozonic notes fade but don't disappear entirely, they linger in memory, the mineral-sea quality of the opening haunting the final hours. What remains is quiet, personal, addictive.
Cultural impact
Caviar Addiction occupies an unusual space, animalic fragrance executed with restraint, where the goal is intimacy rather than impact. The 2022 release has attracted a following among wearers who want something unconventional without announcing it. The mineral-sea quality provides an unexpected foundation while aldehydes add luminous depth and animalic notes bring warm undertone. The combination creates something that rewards close attention rather than filling a room.
