The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Silk Mood Extrait de Parfum arrived in 2013 as part of the Oud collection, Francis Kurkdjian's study of one of perfumery's most demanding materials. Silk Mood, though, wasn't about the oud alone. The name carried the tension. Silk implies softness, fluidity, something handled with care. Mood implies atmosphere, the kind of feeling a room holds when the light is low and conversation has turned personal. Kurkdjian built this Extrait to hold both. Bulgarian rose absolute opens with density, but underneath the silk: oud, present from the start to anchor the composition.
What makes the rose-and-oud pairing here unusual is the papyrus. Rather than letting this become a predictable study in sweetness, the papyrus introduces itself as a counterpoint to the floral. It brings mineral and paper-like qualities that reshape how the rose and oud are perceived. Chamomile adds another layer of complexity, grounding the floral without softening it. The result is a composition that holds both warmth and a certain severity. It doesn't resolve the tension but rather inhabits it, creating the mood the name promised.
The evolution
Bulgarian rose absolute opens first, presenting a thick, jam-like floral presence that announces itself immediately. Chamomile threads through the composition, creating an unexpected counter to the floral sweetness with its cool qualities. The oud arrives, not sharp but dense, its resinous depth pushing the rose slightly back as the composition shifts toward something darker and warmer. The papyrus begins to surface, dry wood qualities emerging and giving the composition a peculiar texture that prevents the sweetness from winning entirely. The drydown lasts for hours, oud and papyrus lingering into the next day, present on skin and fabric, warm and close.
Cultural impact
Oud Silk Mood Extrait occupies a specific position within the collection. It is dense enough to satisfy those drawn to oud, while remaining floral enough to keep rose lovers engaged. The composition targets someone who appreciates concentrated fragrance without the expectation of harshness or aggression. It represents an accessible yet sophisticated approach to the Oud collection, inviting both newcomers and experienced fragrance enthusiasts to discover its layered character.
