The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Smart Set arrived in 2016 as part of the Green Line collection, six releases that shared a commitment to clarity and experimental composition. Nathalie Lorson built this one around a specific tension: a citrus-spice opening that announces itself clearly, then a heart that resists that energy rather than amplifying it. The goal was restraint without quietness. A scent that says something, then steps back to let you decide whether to lean in.
What makes The Smart Set unusual is the plum. It's not a typical heart note, too often used as a sweetness device, a shortcut to warmth. Here, it functions differently. The sweetish fresh plum flesh softens the clove spice and cedar nobility without sweetening the composition into something soft. The plum is the moderator. It keeps the ambition in check, the heat from becoming aggressive. Combined with the smoky tints in the base, it creates a fragrance that reads as tender and warm without ever becoming either.
The evolution
The Smart Set opens with a bergamot-grapefruit duo brightened by black pepper, an instant energy burst that announces intent without apology. Within 10-15 minutes, the brightness recedes and something woody-sweet begins to develop on skin. Cedar needles arrive with a reserved nobility, clove spice piques the air without overwhelming. The plum emerges next, blending with the smoky tints to soften what came before. The drydown is where this fragrance lives. Patchouli, subtle coffee notes, and wet vetiver represent the base chord, earthy, intimate, close to the skin. On most skin types, that's 4-6 hours of presence. On fabric, it carries into the next day, especially in cooler weather. The sillage stays moderate throughout. Not loud. Not fleeting either.
Cultural impact
The Smart Set has found its audience among wearers who appreciate restraint over projection. It sits comfortably in the niche fragrance space as a daywear option that works across seasons, not because it's safe, but because it's considered. The combination of coffee and vetiver in the base gives it a distinctive character that stands apart from the brighter citrus-forward compositions that dominate spring and summer releases.
