The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is the riddle. Joking Aside, from M.INT's Violet Line, arrives in 2016 with the calm of someone who already knows what they think. Fabrice Pellegrin built this around a tension: jasmine and coriander seed as a top pairing that refuses to behave like a standard floral. The coriander doesn't bring heat, it brings definition, a slight edge that keeps the jasmine from becoming soft. This is a fragrance that knew what it wanted from the first sketch.
The aldehydic jasmine structure gives Joking Aside its backbone. Aldehydes have a soapy, effervescent quality, they lift florals into something slightly abstracted, slightly elevated. Used sparingly, they create that characteristic powder bloom you find in the great floral aldehyde compositions. Here, the aldehyde amplifies the jasmine rather than dominating it, while Bulgarian rose and orange blossom share the heart without competing. It's a restraint that takes confidence. Pellegrin understands that restraint is harder than excess.
The evolution
The opening hour belongs to coriander. That sharp, slightly peppery seed note cuts through the jasmine, a clean line drawn before anything sentimental arrives. Then the jasmine exhales. Freesia adds a crystalline lightness that doesn't sweeten, just clarifies. By hour two, the Bulgarian rose opens fully, joined by orange blossom in a warm, powdery bloom that grows closer to skin as the first hour fades. This is the heart's job, to soften what the top established. By hour five or six, you're in sandalwood and vanilla. Tonka bean adds that signature creamy warmth, the kind that lingers in the crook of an elbow the next morning. Not loud. Close. That's the point.
Cultural impact
Joking Aside is a floral aldehyde that does not chase icon status. The aldehydic jasmine structure carries a quiet authority, the aldehydes lending a luminous quality that lifts the floral heart without overwhelming it. The execution is deliberate in its restraint, the composition choosing nuance over volume. This is not a fragrance that tries to fill a room. Instead, it rewards the wearer who leans in close, offering its most interesting facets only to those paying attention. The dry down settles into something soft and slightly powdery, the aldehydes mellowing into a warm base that lingers near the skin for hours.
