La Sovversione was released in 2025 as one half of Lumi's Illegittimo Duo, sold as two compositions that contrast each other thematically. Its counterpart, La Coscienza, occupies the opposite space in the pairing. La Sovversione takes the position of fever, subversion, the refusal to be classified. The nose behind it is Giulia Brigliadori, working from a brief rooted in tension rather than harmony. The name itself, Italian for subversion, signals the intent. This is a fragrance designed to build itself in real time, on the wearer's skin, in the space between identity and impulse. Lumi framed it not as a composition but as an act of divergence, a fragrance that resists settling into a single mood or category.
What makes the structure unusual is the collision of materials. Ash sits in the heart alongside iris, a note already associated with powder and distance, and the pairing amplifies the austerity of both. The mineral char reads cold rather than warm, a note that feels extinguished rather than burning, and the iris sharpens around it instead of softening the blow. Then the base introduces carrot seeds alongside vanilla and Indian sandalwood, an earthy-sweet pivot that prevents the composition from collapsing into pure frost.
The evolution
The opening belongs to plum and raspberry, but rendered drier than their natural sweetness suggests. Turmeric cuts through, adding a savory edge that grounds the fruit in something spiced and unfamiliar. Black pepper sits underneath, low and persistent, giving the first impression a faint hum. As the composition moves into its middle phase, the fruit recedes and iris takes over, bringing its powdery, almost metallic coolness. The ash note arrives not as smoke but as absence, the smell of something recently burned out, and it deepens the iris rather than fighting it. Jasmine flickers briefly at the edges, never floral in the obvious way, more like candlelight catching on skin. Eventually, tonka bean and vanilla begin to surface through the powder, warming the composition without softening its spine.
