The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Шамаханская Царица, the Queen of Shamakhy, is a figure from Russian folklore, a legendary Azerbaijani queen whose name became shorthand for beauty, power, and a certain untameable quality. Ladanika has built its catalogue around these kinds of stories. In 2017, perfumer Yana Andreyeva took that myth and translated it into scent: not literally, but emotionally. The dried plum at the core of this composition isn't a decorative note, it's the queen's richness, her presence in the room before she speaks. The spices that follow are her entourage. The warmth underneath is what remains when the story ends.
The note pyramid here is unusual in its density. Eight base notes. Two appearances of dried plum, once at the top, once in the heart, threading the fragrance like a through-line. The combination of cinnamon, hazelnut, and plum in the heart creates something gourmand-adjacent but grounded by myrrh and labdanum rather than further sweetness. This is where the fragrance earns its 'oriental' classification: not through any single material but through the accumulation of warm, resinous weight. Patchouli keeps the base from floating entirely into abstraction, while musk ensures it stays close to the skin rather than projecting aggressively outward.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately with dried plum sweetness, jammy, almost preserved, like opening a jar of compote. Apricot brightens the fruit without lightening it. The geranium is subtle here, a faint herbal counterweight to the sweetness. Around 30 minutes, cinnamon arrives with real force. This is the fragrance's pivot point. The fruitiness recedes as spice takes the stage, hazelnut adding a nutty richness that feels seasonal, autumnal, right. The drydown is where this one earns its reputation. Amber and vanilla create a warm sweetness, myrrh and labdanum add resinous depth, benzoin brings a sticky balsamic quality, and patchouli grounds it all with an earthy whisper. Musk lingers closest to the skin. On most skin types, expect this to last well past sunset, the kind of longevity that transitions from evening into next morning.
Cultural impact
Ladanika occupies a specific corner of the niche fragrance world, collectors drawn to Russian folklore, seasonal rituals, and unconventional olfactory narratives. The house has cultivated a dedicated following among those who treat fragrance as a portal to strange territories rather than a status marker. Each release builds on the last, creating a catalogue that rewards exploration rather than conquest.
