The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The L.12.12 collection speaks in code. L for Lacoste. 1 for the Petit Piqué weave that made the brand's name. 2 for short sleeves. 12 for the prototypes it took to get the polo right. Yellow, Jaune, is the sunshine chapter. Inspired by the yellow tennis shirt from the Lacoste archive, this fragrance translates the mood of a sun-warmed morning on clay into scent. Sonia Constant built it around optimism: the specific energy before a match begins, not the triumph after.
Grapefruit opens the composition like a first serve, immediate, crisp, citrus-bright. The tonic water accord adds an effervescent mineral quality that sets it apart from the usual citrus parade. Golden Delicious apple and coriander seed form the heart, bringing a fruity-green softness that tempers the sharpness without losing it. The base is where the Lacoste DNA shows: cypress and vetiver anchored by amber, wood notes that echo the brand's clean athletic lines. Nothing here fights for attention. The structure is orderly, confident, and deliberately uncomplicated, sporty in the way a well-played rally feels effortless.
The evolution
The opening lasts about fifteen minutes, bright, almost effervescent grapefruit with the quinine edge of tonic water. Then the pink pepper arrives quietly, not as a blast but as a transition, softening the citrus into something rounder. The heart of Golden Delicious apple and coriander seed takes over gradually, adding a fruity-green warmth that feels like the scent of someone mid-game, slightly flushed, focused. The drydown is where it becomes yours. Cypress and vetiver on your skin, not anyone else's. Amber holds everything together, keeping it close, intimate, and distinctly personal. Not a fragrance that fills a room. A fragrance that someone in that room will notice and wonder about.
Cultural impact
Part of the L.12.12 collection, each fragrance named after a number in the brand's code, Jaune captures the optimism of the yellow tennis shirt. It represents the sunshine chapter in a line built on athletic precision, a bright counterpoint to cooler variants in the range. The fragrance speaks to a specific mood, that feeling of a court-side afternoon where the game is just beginning and the sun hangs high.
