The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2024, L'Objet collaborated with master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena to translate the wild vitality of Mediterranean shores into scent. Kérylos, named for the kingfisher bird symbolizing renewal, captures the moment when ripe citrus falls onto sun-warmed rocks. Ellena approached the brief with his characteristic economy, building from crisp citrus into a heart of mastic resin that recalls the aromatic shrubs dotting coastal cliffs. The collaboration brought tog ether L'Objet's design philosophy, turning everyday objects into moments of pause, with Ellena's decades of olfactory restraint, resulting in a fragrance that feels both immediate and lasting.
Ellena's choice of mastic and galbanum for the heart reflects a commitment to Mediterranean terroir, the same aromatic resins and herbs found on Greek and Turkish coastlines. These notes pair with the citrus opening because they share a quality of clarity: the grapefruit is sharp, the mastic is clean, and neither overwhelms the other. Sandalwood in the base provides warmth without heaviness, while white musk keeps the entire composition close to the skin. The result is a fragrance designed for those who appreciate structure and subtlety over sillage bombs and linear sweet florals.
The evolution
The opening is all clarity and brightness, grapefruit arrives first, tart and slightly bitter, followed quickly by yuzu's delicate floral citrus and mandarin orange's sweet ripeness. This initial burst lasts roughly fifteen minutes before the composition shifts. The heart of mastic resin emerges with a cool, terebinthine quality that evokes Mediterranean scrub, while galbanum adds a green, slightly bitter dimension that keeps the middle from softening too quickly. As the heart fades over the next two hours, white musk and sandalwood take over quietly, creating a skin-close drydown that lingers without projecting loudly. The evolution is deliberate and unhurried, each stage arriving on schedule.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Kérylos has been praised for capturing Mediterranean light, often compared to bright citrus‑green scents like Arancia Rossa (2022) and Delphes (2023). Wearers note its strong sillage and day‑to‑night versatility, making it a staple for those seeking a sun‑driven aromatic that feels both modern and timeless.
