The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Horloge de Flore, founded in 2014 in Grasse, maps each hour to a bloom, creating limited-edition scents that capture flowers at their peak. Au Crépuscule de Morphée was conceived as the night-hour entry in Les Signatures Créatives collection. Hélène Prévot drew on the house clock-inspired philosophy, imagining the moment when the day's last light fades and the dream-state of Morpheus awakens. The name evokes the twilight threshold between waking and sleep, where imagination runs unbridled. Rather than a traditional fresh opening, Prévot chose to begin in medias res, plunging the wearer directly into the nocturnal heart of the composition. Sugar and raspberry serve as the dream's entry point, sweet and inviting, while blackcurrant adds a wine-like depth that suggests the complexity of half-formed thoughts.
Prévot's note philosophy here rejects the conventional opening-heart-base structure in favor of immediate immersion. By eliminating a distinct top or drydown, she creates a fragrance that exists fully formed from the first spray. Sugar provides the hook, drawing the wearer into a world of dreamlike sweetness, while blackcurrant and carrot seed ensure the composition never becomes simplistic. The iris serves as a bridge between the gourmand and the sophisticated, its powdery floral character lending elegance to the sweeter elements. Cedarwood completes the picture, offering warmth that makes the fragrance appropriate for evening wear.
The evolution
The fragrance unfolds as a single continuous heart rather than a traditional pyramid. Sugar and raspberry arrive tog ether, their confectionery sweetness softened by the powdery embrace of violet and iris. Blackcurrant adds a tart counterpoint, preventing the composition from becoming saccharine. As the fragrance evolves on skin, cedarwood emerges gradually, its warm woody presence grounding the florals. The carrot seed note, subtle at first, becomes more pronounced as the sweeter elements fade, introducing an earthy mineral quality that feels appropriately nocturnal and grounded. The journey moves from confectionery brightness to contemplative calm, with each note taking its turn in the spotlight.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Au Crépuscule de Morphée has been noted for turning the niche powdery‑floral niche into a midnight‑hour narrative. Wearers often cite its ability to feel Intimate yet noticeable, making it a favorite for evening gatherings and quiet city strolls. Critics highlight its balanced sweet‑woody contrast, positioning it alongside the house’s other hour‑based scents as a signature of the collection’s temporal storytelling.
