The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
En un Tour de Cadran is a composition by L'Horloge de Flore, a house that draws its identity from the language of flowers and the passage of time. The fragrance carries an official theme described as "an awakening to temptation," a phrase that hints at the tension between brightness and warmth running through the scent. At its center is a meditation on a tipping point, the kind of moment when restraint gives way and something warmer takes over. The composition comes from Hélène Prévot, the perfumer behind the house, and it sits within the brand's broader project of giving each fragrance its own temporal identity, its own hour and mood.
What makes the structure unusual is its restraint. Rather than building warmth from the usual sweet foundations, Prévot reached for tobacco as her anchor, then threaded everything through tonka bean at the heart. The result is sweetness that arrives late, filtered through spice rather than sugar. Fennel seed opens the door with its anise-like coolness, giving the whole thing an herbal edge that keeps the tobacco from tipping into cliché. The tonka acts as a bridge between the green opening and the cured warmth that follows, lending a soft, almost bread-like roundness to the composition.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to fennel, green and slightly sweet, almost like black licorice dissolved into cool air. It reads sharper than expected, a little biting, the kind of opening that makes you pay attention. By the 30-minute mark, the tonka has arrived, warm and bready, rounding out the anise with something almost edible. The tobacco surfaces around the two-hour mark, not as smoke but as cured-leaf warmth, the kind you get from opening a humidor. It never gets ash-heavy. Instead it merges with the tonka into a sweet-spicy close that smells like worn leather and the end of a long evening. As the hours pass, the fennel retreats entirely, leaving behind a unified accord of tobacco and tonka that grows softer and more skin-like, a trace of spice and sweetness that settles into a quiet, lasting presence through the day.
Cultural impact
En un Tour de Cadran threads its tobacco accord through tonka and anise to create a profile that reads as both intimate and slightly unexpected. It appeals to wearers drawn to leather-adjacent warmth without the full weight of a traditional tobacco composition. The sweetness arrives late, the spice stays gentle, and the whole thing settles into something personal rather than performative. There's a sense of quiet confidence in how the materials interact, each one softening the next, producing a scent that feels designed for close proximity rather than projection.
