The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2009 Krigler marked its 105th anniversary. The house blended two varieties of camellia, married to Chinese tea, pink pepper, and Indian cardamom. The fragrance captures the camellia in full bloom, cool and waxy, then warmed by the spices and tea beneath. This anniversary fragrance was composed to capture something lasting and deliberate, a meaningful creation for those who appreciate how an anniversary scent should feel.
Two varieties of camellia in one bottle is unusual in perfumery, each bringing its own character to the blend. The camellia's cool, powdery nature anchors the composition, letting the Chinese tea accord and warm spices build around it. The vanilla and musk base adds a unexpected depth to the florals. Cardamom introduces a quiet warmth that complements rather than competes. Powder and spice work together in a way that creates something cohesive and distinctive.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with bright citrus, Corsican lemon, sharpened by pink pepper. Clean. Clear. The camellia settles in, gradually, as the initial brightness fades to reveal something powdery and warm. Vanilla and musk support from below, adding depth. Cardamom threads through, a subtle warmth that complements the florals. As time passes, the powdery-floral character becomes more pronounced. Cedar emerges, dry and quiet, pulling everything toward a woody close. Musk and vanilla remain as a soft warmth, staying close to the skin. A trace of camellia lingers in the drydown.
Cultural impact
Extraordinaire Camelia 209 arrived in 2009 as Krigler's 105th anniversary release. The fragrance placed camellia as a centerpiece botanical, anchoring it with Chinese tea, pink pepper, Indian cardamom, and warm spices. This combination positioned the scent at an interesting intersection, drawing from floral traditions while incorporating notes that were gaining attention in fragrance circles at the time. Krigler's approach distinguished itself through powdery texture and warm spicing, offering something distinctive in the landscape of contemporary perfumery.
