The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Insomnia arrived in 2023 from Kinetic Perfumes, the Barcelona house that treats scent as motion. Named for the sleepless creative, the one whose best ideas arrive after midnight when the world finally quiets. Miguel Matos built this for a specific state of mind, not a demographic.
The structure is deliberate: leather and tobacco anchor the opening, but they're not the point. The point is what comes next. Gin and lemon arrive like a correction, like the mind catching itself mid-spiral and pulling back to clarity. That tension, between heaviness and brightness, between surrender and alertness, is the insomnia experience. Cypriol oil in the heart adds an earthy, slightly smoky counter to the aquatic notes, preventing the coolness from becoming sterile. The amber base doesn't overwhelm. It settles. Close. Personal. The kind of warmth you have to lean in to find.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes announce themselves without apology. Leather and tobacco fill space, the kind of presence that turns heads before you've even entered the room. Then, somewhere around the forty-five minute mark, the pivot. Gin and lemon cut through the smoke like a window opening in a warm room. Crisp. Sparkling. Almost incongruous, until it isn't. The heart holds for two to four hours: aquatic clarity threaded with patchouli's earthiness, cypriol adding a subtle smoke that keeps the coolness grounded. Then the drydown. Sugar and amber wrap around woody notes, warm and close, the kind of scent that lives on skin and collar rather than filling a room. Eight to ten hours on most skin. Still there the next morning if you forgot to shower.
Cultural impact
Insomnia occupies a specific space: aromatic enough to attract fresh-fruit lovers, dark enough to keep the tobacco-averse at a distance. It doesn't chase the niche market, it simply operates on its own logic. The gin-and-lemon pivot is unusual enough to generate conversation, strong enough sillage to make an impression, and 8-10 hour longevity to back up the presence. This is a fragrance for the person who thinks their best thoughts at 3 AM, who doesn't need a room to know they've been there.
