The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Oudgasm collection was born from Mona Kattan's obsession with oud, not just appreciation, but something closer to reverence. After moving to the Middle East over two decades ago, she immersed herself in the ritual of layering, discovering how this single ingredient could tell countless stories. The collection was designed to explore oud's facets through multiple lenses. Tobacco Oud | 04 is the chapter that leans into warmth and indulgence, where honeyed sweetness meets tobacco's depth and oud's smoky richness. Perfumer Philippine Courtière built this composition around the tension between bright opening notes and a deeply resinous base.
What makes Tobacco Oud | 04 distinctive is how the sweet and savory never fully resolve into one another. The white honey and mandarin keep things lifted and juicy at the top, while the tobacco and oud anchor the drydown with something darker, almost resinous. The clove and saffron add a spicy warmth that bridges both worlds, not quite oriential enough to feel classical, not quite fresh enough to feel modern. It's a middle path that satisfies both crowds, which is probably why it's become one of the collection's standout performers.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and almost unexpectedly sweet, white honey and mandarin feel like they belong in a lighter composition. Then the clove arrives, followed by the saffron's medicinal warmth, and suddenly you're in different territory. The plum adds a jammy quality that softens the spice. By hour two, the base notes begin their slow takeovers: tobacco first, then oud's smoky depth. The vanilla and benzoin add a resinous sweetness that lingers well past hour six. On fabric, the tobacco and oud hold on until the next morning.
Cultural impact
The Oudgasm collection positioned Kayali as a serious player in the oriential fragrance space, offering complex, bold compositions at accessible price points. Tobacco Oud | 04 fills a gap for those who want oud's richness without the intimidating price tags of traditional niche houses.
