The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fifty Four takes its name from Studio 54, the New York nightclub that redefined nightlife in the late 1970s. Pillars of the brand, sexual expression, gender fluidity, creative liberation, translate into a brief: bottle the feeling of walking into a room where the rules dissolve. Julien Rasquinet crafted this scent with the decadence of that era in mind, building from tropical sweetness through exotic spice to indulgent gourmand depth.
The piña colada note serves as an entry point, drawing the wearer into the fragrance's world before revealing deeper layers. Cardamom bridges the playful opening with the richer heart, while davana adds an aromatic quality that grounds the sweetness. The chocolate and saffron heart represents the nightclub's opulence, and the vanilla, rum, and tobacco drydown captures the warmth of bodies moving together on a dance floor.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with piña colada's creamy coconut and pineapple, immediately evoking tropical luxury. Cardamom and davana add complexity, preventing the opening from feeling too sweet. The heart introduces chocolate and saffron, two ingredients steeped in sensory luxury, with cinnamon providing heat and cypriol offering an earthy counterweight. The drydown transforms into a warm embrace of patchouli, vanilla, and rum, while tobacco and sandalwood add structure, creating a finish that feels both hedonistic and refined.
Cultural impact
Fifty Four launched in 2024 to notable attention within niche fragrance circles, named explicitly after Studio 54, the New York nightclub that defined an era of creative liberation and nightlife excess. The fragrance was a finalist in the Independent category at the 2025 Art and Olfaction Awards, a recognition that positions it among the more significant niche releases of recent years. Community reception has been polarized in the way that the best fragrances often are: wearers either adore the boozy Gourmand warmth or find the patchouli-heavy drydown too medicinal or fermented. What nearly everyone agrees on is the longevity, the fragrance lasts, often well beyond what the average wearer expects.
