Why it exists.
The beginning
Gravedigger arrived in 2025 as part of JMP Artisan Perfumes' Transcendental Stories collection, created exclusively for House of Merlo, a perfumery in Warsaw. The name does what it says. This is a fragrance built around the work of digging: damp ground, brick walls softened by decades of rain, ivy that has taken over whatever the living left behind. Jakub Pietrynka, the perfumer behind the brand, leans into raw, unromantic material, and Gravedigger pushes that aesthetic further than most of what comes out of niche perfumery today. Where many green-leaning fragrances stop at fresh-cut grass or pine needles, this one goes underground. The scent is wet clay and cold mortar, the mineral tang of old brickwork that has spent a century absorbing rainwater.
The unusual move here is the middle of the pyramid. Brick and ivy as heart notes, with a rose caught between them. The rose is there, but it's been left out in the weather, petals darkened by rain and grit rather than the dewy sweetness of a florist's bunch. It adds a thin sweetness to a heart that would otherwise read as pure mineral and vegetation. Surrounded by resin, incense, and a literal mist note up top, and rooted in Java vetiver and weathered wood below, the composition refuses the usual green-fragrance template. The top notes are no bright burst of citrus or green leaves.
The evolution
The opening hits before the bottle's open for long. Elemi resin and incense arrive sharp, almost medicinal, like the air inside a stone chapel. A mist accord sits over both, flattening the brightness into something grey and close. Within 15 minutes the smoke recedes and the heart takes over: brick, not warm terracotta but cold and mineral, with ivy threading through it in a way that reads more like damp leaf than floral. A rose shows up here too, but it's a weather-beaten rose, the kind growing wild through a cemetery fence. It doesn't announce itself. It just adds a thin sweetness that keeps the brick from feeling sterile. By the two-hour mark the composition has shifted fully into its base. Java vetiver takes the lead, dry and almost metallic, sitting on patchouli that's been dragged through soil rather than refined into a designer clean.
Cultural impact
Gravedigger is part of a small catalogue of exclusive releases distributed through House of Merlo in Warsaw, a perfumery that has built its identity around niche and artisanal houses. The exclusive run through that single retail channel gave the fragrance a limited footprint at launch, keeping it from the broader international platforms where most niche perfume circulates. Collectors familiar with Polish perfumery tend to follow the House of Merlo roster closely, and JMP's Transcendental Stories line has earned attention for its heavier, darker material.
