The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kada Regatta arrived in 2024 as part of Jinx Smells' second collection, and it reads like Arthur Clay Emrick working through his fascination with sweet-animalic territory at full intensity. The name carries a nautical rhythm, but the composition leans landlocked: dense fruit, grape pomace, wine grape, and the kind of florals that bloom heavy in late summer. Emrick built it as a limited release, and the production run was apparently discontinued. There are no concessions here, no clean citrus opener to ease you in. You get purple grape and cherry blossom, civet and clove, Bulgarian rose absolute and Thai oud, all arriving at once and refusing to negotiate.
What's unusual about this composition isn't any single note. It's the layering of grape in three forms: wine grape for tartness, grape pomace for that bruised-skin sweetness, and the fruit accord woven underneath Bulgarian rose absolute. Add to that the animalic core of natural civet, Thai oud and Malayan oud, orris absolute, and champaca, and you've got a composition that treats restraint as an afterthought. The floral density is the point. Emrick doesn't chase transparency here.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are almost overwhelming: grape and cherry blossom hit sweet and jammy, Bulgarian rose absolute adds a syrupy purple depth, and civet is already threading underneath, giving the fruit a musk-coated edge. There's no real 'opening' in the traditional sense. Everything arrives together, stacked rather than staggered, so the composition reads as a wall of scent from the first spray. By the two-hour mark, the fruit has darkened into something closer to wine reduction, the champaca starts to bloom through the middle, and the Thai oud pushes up from the base like wood that's been sitting in something fermented. The cumin and clove warm up rather than sharpen, lending a spiced-belly quality to the heart. By hour four, you're in the drydown, and it's all orris, tonka bean, cocoa, vanilla, and that persistent civet clinging to your sweater.
Cultural impact
Kada Regatta sits firmly in Jinx Smells' sweet-animalic territory, the kind of composition that turns grape and civet into a single overripe impression rather than keeping them as separate exhibits. The grape accord gives it a jammy, almost wine-stained character, while the civet and oud keep things grounded in something darker and more intimate. It's the sort of scent that rewards wearers who like their florals dense, their oud unapologetic, and their fruit accords served alongside something feral.
