The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Scandal Gold arrived in 2021 as a continuation of JPG's Scandal lineage, a house known for making noise. The perfumers Daphné Bugey, Fabrice Pellegrin, and Hamid Merati-Kashani composed this addition to the collection with attention to contrast and presence. The honey note blooms immediately, unapologetically rich, while saffron brings a dusty warmth that threads through the sweetness. Cardamom provides a bright, green counterpoint that keeps the composition from becoming flat. The overall effect is warm, bold, and immediately commanding.
What makes this composition unusual is the honey placement. It opens the fragrance, front and center, demanding attention from the first spray. Saffron amplifies that warmth with its signature dusty spice, while cardamom adds a sharp, green counterpoint that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. The honey itself is syrupy and golden, lingering in the top notes while the spices take over the heart. As the fragrance develops, the honey note softens and becomes less immediate, integrating with the dusty warmth of the saffron.
The evolution
The opening is all honey and saffron, a thick, golden wave that hits immediately. There's no citrus to lighten it, no aquatic to cool it. Just sweetness and spice, no letup. Cardamom arrives within minutes, threading green and sharp through the honey, preventing it from becoming syrupy. The florals don't announce themselves so much as infiltrate: jasmine sambac and rose soften the edges, adding a quiet floral warmth beneath the honey's weight. The Cypriol oil (nagarmotha) brings earthiness, mineral, root-like, that anchors the sweetness. By the second hour, leather emerges, bold and unmistakable. Patchouli follows, dark and slightly bitter. Sandalwood smooths everything into a warm, slightly animalic drydown that stays close to the skin but refuses to disappear. Six to eight hours later, there's still something there, warm, resinous, honey-leather lingering on fabric.
Cultural impact
Scandal Gold arrived in 2021 as JPG continued building its Scandal franchise. The house has a track record for bold, memorable scents, Classique, Le Male, Ultra Male, and Scandal Gold fits that lineage. The honey-saffron opening and leather drydown give it a distinctive character within the warm-spicy category. The combination of honey's golden sweetness with saffron's dusty warmth creates a rich, spicy core that feels different from the other flankers. The leather base anchors the composition, adding depth and a dark counterpoint to the sweeter notes.
