Paris Bleu

Rhubarb in men's fragrance was unusual in 1990. Most compositions reaching for freshness used citrus or marine accords, rhubarb brought something vegetable, almost green, that felt simultaneously fresh and strange. Jean Marc Paris paired it with lavender and black pepper, two notes that could hold their own against that initial tartness, then grounded everything in leather and musk. The result is a pyramid that actually earns its structure: bright on top, warm in the middle, intimate at the base.

The evolution

The opening hits sharp, rhubarb's tart vegetable note arrives first, demanding attention before bergamot and ginger smooth the edges. Thirty minutes in, the lavender takes over, but it's not the quiet lavender of barbershop fame. Black pepper and nutmeg have complicated it. The ginger stays close to the skin, a warmth that doesn't announce itself. By the second hour, the leather emerges, soft, worn, like the interior of a car that's seen some roads. Musk and amber settle underneath, pulling the whole composition inward. The drydown reveals the amber warmth lingering with traces of lavender, intimate and restrained compared to the confident opening. Performance is moderate, with a gradual fade that maintains the scent's character until it gently disappears.
