The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2021, Guerlain created a fragrance dedicated to the city of Xi'an. The result is sold in one place only: the gift shop of the Xi'an city museum. Three notes. Bamboo, blossoms, sandalwood. No grand gestures, no heavy spices. The composition is clean and direct, with a clarity that lets each element speak without competition. It carries a sense of restraint, a quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself. The bamboo brings a green, slightly mineral freshness. The blossoms add a soft floral quality that softens rather than sweetens. The sandalwood provides warmth and creaminess in the base. Together they form something that feels considered and complete.
The pyramid is unusually spare for a Guerlain fragrance, almost an act of restraint. Bamboo as a top note is uncommon; it reads green and almost mineral rather than sharp or citric. Blossoms as the heart keeps things soft without tipping into sweetness. The sandalwood base is the decision that holds everything together: creamy, warm, slightly woody, and patient enough to last through a full day. This is a fragrance that trusts silence.
The evolution
Bamboo opens clean and immediate, the smell of green stalks in morning light, slightly dewy, faintly mineral. Within twenty minutes, the blossoms arrive quietly, not blooming so much as softening the edges of everything that came before. The transition isn't dramatic; it's more like the moment a room adjusts when the curtains open. The sandalwood begins its slow work around the forty-minute mark, moving upward through the composition like warmth rising from skin. By the second hour, the green has receded but not disappeared, it's still there, underneath, supporting. The drydown is what stays: creamy wood, close to the skin, intimate. The sandalwood settles into something persistent, a presence that holds rather than projects, lingering in the way that the best quiet things do.
Cultural impact
The Xi'an fragrance is available in exactly one retail location on earth: the Xi'an City Museum gift shop. The green bamboo freshness reads as modern without trending. The sandalwood in the base draws on a classic perfumery material, used here with restraint. The overall effect is one of composure, a fragrance that asks nothing of the room it enters.
