The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Flora Garden Collection landed in May 2012 under Frida Giannini's creative direction, five fragrances built around the iconic 1966 Gucci scarf designed by Vittorio Accornero for Princess Grace of Monaco. Each scent represented a different blossom from that original pattern: Glorious Mandarin, Gracious Tuberose, Gorgeous Gardenia, Glamorous Magnolia, Generous Violet. The idea was that each fragrance would reflect a facet of the same woman. Olivier Cresp formulated Glorious Mandarin to capture what Giannini called 'a sort of euphoria in mandarin, since it's such a sparkly fruit.' The result was an EDT that opened on mandarin and peony, heart of jasmine and piña colada, anchored by white musk, woody notes, and amber.
The piña colada note is a notable element in Glorious Mandarin. It brings a tropical cocktail quality to the composition, more fruity than classical garden floral. That creamy addition gives the composition a warm-weather character. The pairing of mandarin with peony in the top notes is also worth noting: citrus brightness against a soft, powdery floral. Jasmine slides in and deepens the floral register. The piña colada adds a creamy, tropical warmth that keeps jasmine from going heavy, reading as a breezy garden rather than a hothouse. The fruity sweetness lingers here.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, mandarin's sweet-tart brightness hits within seconds, followed almost immediately by peony's soft, powdery floral. The citrus gives the peony an effervescent quality. Within minutes, jasmine enters and shifts the composition from fruity toward garden-floral. The piña colada adds a creamy, tropical counterweight that keeps jasmine from going too heady, it reads as breezy, not heavy. By the mid-drydown, the mandarin has faded and the peony has softened. The piña colada lingers longest in the heart, then slowly yields to white musk, woody notes, and amber. The drydown is warm and intimate, close to the skin rather than filling the room. Sillage is moderate throughout: present enough for someone standing beside you to notice, not strong enough to announce your arrival across a dinner table.
Cultural impact
The Flora Garden Collection arrived in 2012 as Gucci's fragrance line built around a heritage scarf motif, five flankers each representing a different facet of femininity. Glorious Mandarin stood apart for its tropical piña colada note. The elongated hexagonal bottle with a transparent stopper gave it a modern edge, while the Abbey Lee Kershaw campaign brought an editorial confidence to the marketing. The mandarin and peony opening provides bright citrus and soft floral balance, while the piña colada adds tropical warmth that distinguishes this flanker from the other releases in the collection.
