Why it exists.
The beginning
Modern Heritage arrived in 2021 as part of Gissah's growing catalogue, a Kuwaiti house with a quickly expanding roster of releases. The name does what it says: this is a contemporary composition reaching back toward classical structure, the kind of oud-and-spice architecture that defined Arabian perfumery for centuries, rebuilt for a wearer who wants heritage without the weight of tradition. Gissah built its identity on translating Arab narratives into scent, and Modern Heritage reads as their clearest statement on what that translation can look like when the brief is simply to make something that endures. The brief here is oud, but not oud alone, and the composition makes that clear from the first spray.
The structural choice here is restraint disguised as confidence. Oud holds a prominent position in the composition, which is a commitment. Here it shoulders the top alongside black pepper and geranium, a triangle that sets up an unusual dynamic: the resinous wood has to argue with spice from the first spray, and that tension carries. The raspberry in the heart is the other interesting call. It's easy to make a raspberry note read as candy or as jam. Paired with cypriol, patchouli, and iris, it becomes earthy and slightly tart instead, more fruit on a vine than fruit in a bowl.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a negotiation. Black pepper leads, sharp and almost fizzy, with geranium giving it a green edge. Then oud surfaces underneath, not as smoke but as wood that smells like it's been somewhere, like furniture in a room that's been lived in for decades. The pepper doesn't leave. It just makes space. As the opening settles, the raspberry makes its presence known, and the composition shifts register: still woody, still warm, but now there's a thread of sweetness running through the iris, something cool and almost chalky that keeps the fruit from going syrupy. Cypriol and patchouli deepen the midphase, turning the scent earthward, grounding that raspberry into soil rather than letting it float toward frosting. The transition is gradual rather than dramatic, more of a slow tilt than a turn. In the later stages of the wear, the drydown is where this earns its name.
Cultural impact
Wears like a wardrobe staple rather than a statement piece. The kind of fragrance that suits someone who treats their collection as autobiography: accumulated chapters of taste rather than a single headline. The pepper and geranium in the opening give it enough character to register as a signature, but the drydown pulls so close to the skin that it never overwhelms a room. It's a composition that works across seasons and occasions, equally at home in a formal setting or a casual one. The raspberry and iris keep it from tipping fully into the oriental register, lending a quieter, more European-inflected sensibility to an oud-led structure.
