The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Blooming Rose takes its name from the five-petal corolla of the rose, an upside-down heart that has symbolized absolute completeness across cultures, from sacred to profane love. The question for perfumer Alexander Lee was how to construct that symbolism into something wearable in 2019. Rather than reaching for the expected rosewater path, Lee built upward from a foundation of cedar and sandalwood, anchoring a floral heart that wouldn't drift into nostalgia.
The choice of honey pomelo as a top note sets Blooming Rose apart from the standard citrus Rose opening, it's not the sharp zest of grapefruit but something rounder, almost floral itself, which threads the handoff to freesia and jasmine more naturally. The synthetic-citrus descriptor in community ratings reflects the modern character of these materials: bright, consistent, and unapologetically contemporary. For those who find traditional rose fragrances too heavy or vintage-coded, this construction offers something different, the warmth without the weight, the sweetness without the settling into powder.
The evolution
The opening lands bright, raspberry and blackcurrant hit almost effervescent, with the honey pomelo adding a rounded tartness that keeps things from going flat. Ten minutes in, the rose begins to assert itself, not the dusty dried-petal kind but something alive, cushioned by freesia and jasmine. The transition feels intentional rather than abrupt. By the second hour, the woody base takes over, cedar and sandalwood warm the drydown without heavy thickness, the white woods keeping everything close and intimate rather than projecting outward. The rose doesn't disappear. It settles. Four to six hours in, you're catching whiffs close to the skin, a memory of the heart rather than the top. This is the part people come back for.
Cultural impact
Blooming Rose launched in 2019 as part of Gianfranco Ferre's fragrance collection, continuing the house's legacy of architectural-inspired perfumery. The fragrance reflects a broader industry trend toward modern fruity-floral compositions that balance contemporary synthetic materials with traditional natural extracts like rose oil. As Italian fashion houses increasingly compete in the accessible luxury fragrance market, Blooming Rose represents a calculated entry into the versatile fruity-floral-woody genre that appeals to consumers seeking distinctive yet wearable scents at moderate price points.
