The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lucas Sieuzac structured First Impression to open clean and assert itself immediately, grapefruit and bergamot delivering that citrus jolt, before letting the composition evolve into something quieter, more considered. The opening is bright and tart, the kind of citrus presence that announces itself without apology. From there, the fragrance settles into a more thoughtful register, the initial energy tempering into something subtler. It's the fragrance equivalent of someone who walks into a room with purpose, not performance.
What makes the structure interesting is how the aquatic notes interrupt the citrus before it gets too sharp. The water notes arrive within minutes, cooling the grapefruit, rounding the edges. The ginger in the heart then introduces something unexpected, a warmth that sneaks in from the left field. The violet doesn't let it get too spicy, though. That powdery floral softens the ginger's heat, creating a middle act that feels neither cold nor warm, just balanced in a way that's genuinely useful.
The evolution
The opening is grapefruit and bergamot, bright, tart, immediate. It announces itself in the opening minutes, the kind of citrus that cuts through everything. Then the aquatic notes arrive. The sharp edges soften into something cleaner than expected. The citrus doesn't disappear, it's still there, underneath, but the water notes take the edge off. The heart reveals itself next: ginger first, a clean heat that arrives unexpectedly. The violet follows, powdery and slightly sweet, preventing the ginger from getting too spicy. The composition eventually settles into its base. Cedarwood and musk, quiet, close, personal. The ambrette adds a warm, slightly animalic undertone that keeps the drydown from smelling clinical. This is where it lives for the next few hours: intimate, grounded, and entirely yours.
Cultural impact
First Impression opens with a fresh, aquatic-citrus character that works across contexts. The ginger-violet pairing in the heart gives it enough distinction, while the straightforward citrus-aquatic opening ensures versatility. For the wearer who wants something present but not loud, this hits the brief.
