Why it exists.
The beginning
Murban is the opening statement from GHAFF, an Emirati fragrance house. For their debut composition, the house turned to Céline Ripert, a perfumer whose hand is immediately legible in the way Murban unfolds on skin. The brief reads as simple in concept and complex in execution: a warm, resinous oriental that earns its weight through dessert-adjacent textures rather than a loud top-note declaration. On the opening, a generous pour of crème-brûlée accord arrives first, its caramelized sugar sweetness softened by the vanilla-bean custard underneath. It's gourmand in a way that feels architectural rather than sticky, the burnt-sugar edge doing the work of keeping the sweetness honest.
What makes Murban worth paying attention to is the middle stretch. Crème brûlée and milky notes aren't common bedfellows with cashmere wood in the oud-forward Gulf tradition, where hearts usually belong to rose, saffron, or taif. Ripert sidesteps that and builds the heart around dairy sweetness and woody softness instead. The cacao underneath adds a bittersweet gravity that keeps the dessert from collapsing into pure sugar. It's a gourmand heart wearing an oriental coat, and that hybrid is where Murban stakes its claim.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost aggressive. Bitter orange and rum arrive together, sharp and lifted, with the cherry sitting somewhere between them like the third voice in a quiet argument. Within thirty minutes the citrus retreats and the liqueur quality softens into something that reads more like confection than cocktail. Cashmere wood and cacao take over the middle hour, the crème brûlée adding a scorched-sugar warmth that settles into skin without sticking to it. By hour three, the composition has shifted almost entirely. The rum is a memory, the cherry has become a low hum, and the base takes command: amber, guaiac wood, musk, and oud arrive not as a wall but as a slow tide. Vanilla threads through everything from the second hour onward, growing louder as the night goes on. The oud is restrained, smoky rather than barnyard, and it grounds the sweetness without fighting it. On fabric the next morning, the drydown reads warm and milky, the oud softened to a whisper, the vanilla still sweet but no longer loud.
Cultural impact
Murban makes a quiet kind of statement, and it earns attention on its own terms. The crème-brûlée-and-oud pairing reads as deliberate rather than accidental, two languages of perfumery that don't typically share a sentence being asked to cooperate here. What makes it land is the restraint: the sweetness is calibrated, the oud is lacquered rather than raw, and nothing overwhelms. The composition opens with that custard-and-burnt-sugar warmth, then slowly trades its gourmand energy for a resinous, slightly smoky close that lingers for hours on skin.
