The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Crown arrived in 2023 as part of Ggema's Sapphire Collection, a suite of fragrances designed to translate gemstone energy into scent. Shyamala Maisondieu composed it, drawing on the warm, tactile vocabulary of leather and tobacco, brightened by Sicilian bergamot and laced with pink and black pepper. The fragrance reads as a piece with presence, structured around a spiced tobacco-leather core that keeps its authority from first spray to final fade. Crown leans into the materials that built the tobacco-leather genre while sidestepping its heaviest conventions, letting the citrus and pepper accents carry enough brightness to keep the composition from collapsing into weight.
The composition pairs two peppers with bergamot to create a sparkling entry, then drops straight into leather and tobacco without floral cushioning. The drydown leans vanilla and musk, which softens the architecture into something personal. It's a short pyramid that does more with less, relying on a tight cast of materials rather than a sprawling structure. The bergamot does the brightening, the peppers do the biting, and the leather-tobacco axis does the anchoring. Nothing is crowded, nothing feels padded with orientals or gourmands to round the edges.
The evolution
The first stretch belongs to the peppers. Black and pink together create a dry, almost crackling heat that sits above the bergamot's cool citrus brightness. It's sharp without aggression, the kind of opening that makes you check your wrist twice. The two peppers seem to spar rather than harmonize, one leaning greener and the other more mineral, both playing off the citrus like flint against steel. The bergamot never becomes a full Mediterranean postcard; it stays squeezed and slightly bitter, a cool counterweight to the warmth already building underneath. The transition into leather and tobacco happens smoothly, without the floral bridge that many compositions use to ease the shift. The leather arrives less as a jacket or a saddle and more as the faint warmth of something already softened, folded into the tobacco's dry, sweet smoke. After a while, the vanilla and musk take over.
Cultural impact
Crown sits within Ggema's Sapphire Collection, a 2023 lineup that gathered the house's gemstone-inspired fragrances into a coherent series. The scent reads as intentional without performing, a composition that carries presence without leaning on the louder conventions of the tobacco-leather genre. Its combination of cool citrus opening, spiced mid-section, and creamy musked base gives it a rhythm that works well in settings where richness is welcome.
