Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Ggema begins in the early 2020s when Ruth Meaulle, a gemologist based in Antwerp, partnered with her husband Thomas to explore how the visual language of gemstones could be expressed through perfume. Ruth’s background in mineral appraisal gave her a detailed understanding of colour, clarity and rarity, while Thomas brought financial acumen and a network of contacts in the luxury sector. Their collaboration led to the creation of a brand that would marry the tactile world of gems with the intangible realm of scent. By 2022 the couple had secured a modest workshop on the outskirts of Paris, where they began sourcing raw materials directly from established growers in Grasse, Madagascar and other traditional perfume regions. The first public collection, dubbed the Sapphire Collection, appeared on Fragrantica in 2023 and was accompanied by a series of single‑note releases – Crown, Lucky Moon, Scarlet, Blue Velvet, Rouge Passion, Ruby Rouge, Duke, Céleste, Love’s Divine and Lady Ruby – all launched within the same year. Each fragrance was positioned as a “colour‑emotion” experience, a concept that resonated with a niche audience seeking more than a traditional scent narrative. Throughout 2023 the brand expanded its distribution through select boutique partners and online platforms, while maintaining a policy of limited batch sizes to preserve exclusivity. In 2024 Ggema announced a partnership with a Parisian crystal studio to embed finely ground gemstones into the perfume bottles, a move that reinforced the house’s commitment to material authenticity. The brand’s evolution reflects a consistent focus on marrying visual art with olfactory craft, a path that remains guided by the founders’ original vision of colour‑driven fragrance. Ggema’s creative vision rests on the premise that colour and scent share a common emotional vocabulary. The founders describe their work as an attempt to translate the energy of a gemstone into an aromatic signature, a process that begins with selecting a hue and then identifying notes that evoke its psychological impact. Ruth’s gemological expertise informs the palette: a deep red may inspire a blend of rose and raspberry, while a cool blue leads to marine accords and lavender. The brand values transparency, sourcing ingredients from recognised growers in Grasse, Madagascar, India and Brazil, and it insists on traceable supply chains. Sustainability is addressed through modest production runs that reduce waste, and through the use of recyclable glass for bottles. Ggema also emphasizes personal expression; each fragrance is marketed as a “signature aura” rather than a seasonal trend, encouraging wearers to align the scent with their own colour identity. The house avoids generic marketing language, instead offering concise scent narratives that reference the specific gemstone inspiration behind each perfume.
