The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ruby Chéri arrived in 2024 from Galimard. Perfumer Yusuke Masuda turned to Morello cherry as the foundation, building outward from there. Cherry blossom appeared next, its delicate presence offering a counterweight to the fruit's denser qualities. The Japanese inspiration runs through the composition deliberately but remains unliteral. This isn't meant to replicate a specific cherry blossom season. It's an interpretation, capturing what that blossom feels like when reimagined through the lens of French perfumery, its ephemeral beauty translated into something that lingers and unfolds on the skin.
The coffee in the heart is the quiet surprise. Most cherry fragrances skip it, preferring to stay in floral territory. Masuda put it there deliberately, a warm, slightly bitter anchor that keeps the cherry and blossom from floating into pure sweetness. Magnolia bridges the transition, soft and creamy, preventing the coffee from pulling too dark. The base is where patience pays off: sandalwood and vanilla ground everything, while musk keeps it close to skin rather than announcing itself across a room. It's a fragrance that knows what it wants to be and doesn't hedge.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and slightly tart, almond first, then Morello cherry arriving with a whisper rather than a shout. For the first twenty minutes, it's all softness: cherry blossom floating above the fruit, the two barely distinguishable. Then the coffee arrives, not as a punch but as a slow climb. It pulls the sweetness down a notch, adds weight to what was starting to feel airy. The magnolia follows, rounding the edges, turning the composition from crisp to creamy. By the second hour, the vanilla begins to show, not dominating but settling into place. The sandalwood arrives last, quiet and persistent, keeping everything warm for hours after. The fragrance unfolds in distinct stages, each note taking its turn before yielding to the next, creating a progression that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
Ruby Chéri brings a different angle to cherry in fragrance: the Morello variety, coffee in the heart, and a Japanese cherry blossom inspiration filtered through French technique. The composition occupies a specific space, neither purely floral nor overtly sweet, offering something with more character for someone exploring beyond mainstream options. It appeals to those drawn to cherry notes but wanting something that moves in unexpected directions rather than following familiar territory.
