The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bois de Lune was released in 2019 as part of Galimard's Gamme Bois de Lune collection, emerging from the historic perfume capital of France. The house built this composition around accessible, immediately legible materials, selecting lavender and orchard fruits to establish a clean aromatic-fruity character from the first spray. Rather than reaching for complexity or surprise, Galimard designed a fragrance that communicates clearly and confidently.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of balance rather than boldness. Lavender anchors the opening with herbaceous clarity, orchard fruits provide sweetness without heaviness, and the woody heart adds necessary structure. Ylang-ylang and iris bring a floral complexity that prevents the drydown from feeling flat, while sandalwood and musk ensure the final phase feels warm and intimate rather than fleeting.
The evolution
The opening unfolds with lavender's herbal clarity, softened quickly by apple and pear to create a bright, dewy freshness. As the top notes fade over the first hour, cedarwood takes gradual hold, its dry woody character grounding what came before. Iris powder blooms subtly alongside ylang-ylang's exotic creaminess, adding floral depth and a tactile quality to the middle. By the time the drydown arrives, sandalwood has asserted itself as the dominant material, wrapping the composition in its milky warmth while musk provides a skin-close finish that lingers gently.
Cultural impact
Bois de Lune reflects a modern reinterpretation of classic Provençal lavender traditions, marrying them with the crispness of orchard fruits that have long symbolized French countryside celebrations. The fragrance emerged in 2019 as part of Galimard’s effort to honor regional botanical heritage while appealing to contemporary sensibilities. Its composition nods to historic lavender fields that have been cultivated for centuries, yet it introduces apple and pear notes that echo the seasonal harvest festivals of the region. By blending these elements, the scent captures both the timeless serenity of rural France and the dynamic energy of today’s perfumery, illustrating how cultural memory can be expressed through scent without losing relevance in modern wardrobes.
