The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Francesca Bianchi operates from her Amsterdam studio where her perfumes read like personal letters written in chemistry. Cuir Soyeux was commissioned exclusively for Perfume Lounge, the Dutch retailer known for championing niche perfumery, and launched in 2019 as a meditation on leather's capacity for gentleness. Rather than reaching for the sharp, smoky leather accords common to the genre, Bianchi sought something closer to the leather of a vintage coat that has absorbed years of the wearer's own scent. The name, French for 'silky leather,' signals this intent: the material is already softened, already lived in, already intimate.
Bianchi's approach to Cuir Soyeux reflects a broader philosophy in her work: that perfume should feel like a memory rather than an event. By omitting a traditional top note and allowing leather to arrive in full collaboration with orris and heliotrope, she sidesteps the expectation of a sparkling first impression in favor of an immediate and sustained intimacy. The choice of florals matters here: orris, narcissus, and heliotrope are not bright, heady florals designed to announce themselves across a room. They are soft, powdery, slightly melancholic florals that work in close proximity, meant to be discovered rather than broadcast.
The evolution
The arc of Cuir Soyeux defies the conventional perfume architecture of top, heart, and base because Bianchi chose to build a fragrance that functions as a single continuous gesture rather than a sequence of reveals. From the first moment, leather and orris arrive together, the root's violet-powder softness immediately tempering the material's natural bite. This immediate softness is not an accident: it reflects the perfumer's desire to present leather as something already tender, already familiar. The heart deepens this initial impression through narcissus and magnolia, which layer a creamy green floral presence into the leather's grain. Heliotrope adds a faintly almond musk that extends the florals' sweetness while labdanum provides a resinous amber anchor that keeps the composition grounded. Bourbon vanilla introduces a warm, slightly sweet depth that works against the leather's potential harshness, creating a gourmand quality that reads as comfort rather than novelty.
Cultural impact
Cuir Soyeux quickly became a cult favorite among niche collectors, praised for its daring marriage of raw leather and powdery florals. Its exclusive launch through Perfume Lounge sparked conversations about gender‑fluid leather scents, and wearers often cite its ability to stand out in Intimate settings without overwhelming the space.
