The beginning
Historic Cedar arrived in 2020 from Fragrance World Trading LLC, and the composition makes its lineage clear: it draws direct inspiration from Penhaligon's Halfeti Cedar. Fragrance World translated that reference through their own lens of warm, accessible spice, and the result is an oriental woody built on rum, saffron, and two varieties of cedar stacked together. That double-cedar architecture is deliberate, a repositioning that takes the original idea and refines it into something slightly different in execution. Rum opens with its fermented sweetness, saffron threads through with a dusky warmth, and the two cedars do the heavy structural work. It's a translation done with respect for the source but enough confidence to let the formula breathe on its own terms.
Two cedars doing different work is the unusual move here, and it's worth paying attention to how they split the labor. Virginia cedar sits in the heart, bringing a dry, almost papery texture that gives the midphase its grain. Atlas cedar anchors the base, heavier and more resinous, the one that stays behind after everything else evaporates. The evolution
The opening is boozy and generous. Cardamom cuts through with a dry, peppery snap, green and almost cool against all that warmth. This is the phase that pulls you in, the part where everything is happening at once. Then the immortelle arrives, and the texture shifts. The sweetness pulls back into something drier, hay-like, almost tobacco-adjacent, a rougher weave replacing the smooth boozy opening. Cinnamon layers in, adding dry heat without sweetness, and Virginia cedar threads through the middle with its clean woodiness, sharp against the surrounding warmth. By the time the Atlas cedar takes over, the fragrance has settled.
