Proud Of You Absolute landed in 2023 as part of Fragrance World's broader collection of orientals and fougère-amber compositions. The brief was straightforward: warmth that doesn't announce itself, sweetness that doesn't overwhelm, a scent that works when the temperature drops and the evenings stretch. The structure follows a classic fougère-amber template, aromatic top, herbal heart, gourmand base, but the chestnut note threading through both opening and drydown gives it a recognizable character. This is the kind of fragrance a brand makes when it already knows its audience and trusts them to pay attention.
Chestnut is the structural oddity here. It opens fresh and slightly smoky in the top, then reappears candied and warm in the base, the same material doing two different jobs across the scent's lifespan. That duality is what makes the evolution read as intentional rather than meandering. The vanilla, cedar, and patchouli in the base do the expected work of grounding and deepening, but the chestnut is what keeps you curious about what's coming next. The evolution
The opening hits with rum's warmth and a sharp aldehydic edge that fades faster than expected. Within minutes, the bergamot and elemi arrive, resinous, bright, slightly citrusy. The first twenty minutes are the most challenging: alcohol-sharp, then citrus-sharp, then settling into something softer as the heart begins to form. The heart of lavender and davana arrives quietly. This is the unexpected part. The lavender doesn't dominate, it hums, cool and aromatic, with davana's faint green-fruity edge lifting it slightly. The transition from top to heart is subtle rather than dramatic. The base is where this earns attention. Madagascar vanilla leads, creamy, sweet, gourmand, before chestnut and cedar assert themselves. The patchouli adds earth and a slight bitterness that prevents the vanilla from becoming cloying. This is a warm, close, intimate drydown. The sillage drops to skin level after the first two hours, but the longevity on fabric is strong, still detectable the next morning.
