The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fragrance Du Bois built its reputation on sustainably sourced oud, a commitment born from Jonnie Swarbrick's travels through Southeast Asian growing regions where traditional extraction methods remain practices. The house's partnership reflects a broader mission to bring transparency to luxury fragrance sourcing. Shadi Samra approached Lovers as the chemistry collection, designing it not as a decorative scent but as something that creates tension and response. Her use of passion fruit and plum as opening notes signals immediately that this is not a polite fragrance. The inclusion of ginger ensures the sweetness carries friction.
The note choices in Lovers reflect a specific philosophy about contrast. Passion fruit and plum are inherently sweet; ginger exists to challenge that sweetness. Rose and saffron create a heart that feels neither purely romantic nor purely exotic but somewhere between the two. The woody base of cashmere wood, cedarwood, sandalwood, patchouli, and vetiver grounds the composition in warmth, ensuring the fragrance reads as intimate rather than distant. This is fragrance designed for moments of genuine connection rather than casual compliments.
The evolution
The opening of Lovers crackles with brightness from passion fruit and plum, a combination that feels almost electric against the spice of ginger. Bergamot prevents the tropical notes from overwhelming, keeping the start grounded in citrus. As the composition evolves, rose and saffron take over, with jasmine supporting the floral transition. The contrast between the bright opening and the complex heart marks the fragrance's central shift. By the time cashmere wood, cedarwood, and sandalwood arrive in the drydown, the fragrance has traveled from sharp brightness to warm, enveloping depth. Patchouli and vetiver ensure the final stages feel rooted rather than delicate.
Cultural impact
Lovers arrived in 2023 as part of Fragrance Du Bois' For Lovers collection, positioning itself within a niche fragrance movement that prizes intimate wear over projecting scent. The 2023 launch places it in a post-pandemic era where wearers increasingly seek personal, close-skin fragrances rather than room-announcing statement scents. The chemistry-driven framing reflects a broader cultural conversation about attraction and scent as a personal signature rather than a social announcement.
