Why it exists.
The beginning
Aurelia arrived in 2015, joining the catalogue from James Elliott's small perfume studio. Filigree & Shadow had already moved past its earliest steps, and the brand's compositions had begun to take shape around the kinds of moods and moments a perfumer wants to translate into something you can wear. Aurelia fits that tradition. The name itself suggests something golden, dawn-colored, the kind of light that arrives just before the room warms up. Elliott's compositions are shaped around melodic themes of notes, and in Aurelia that theme reads warm and floral without tipping into the syrupy territory yellow florals often fall into. The opening is bright and citrus-edged, with yuzu and bergamot lending a cool, almost effervescent quality to the first spray.
The interesting move in Aurelia is putting yuzu and bergamot at the top of a composition that otherwise runs toward honey, spice, and tuberose. This one starts cold, almost bracing, then pulls you into the mimosa and green tea heart before the clove and ylang-ylang arrive at the base. The clove is what separates it from the soft-focus mimosa crowd. It bites. The patchouli underneath keeps everything grounded without smelling like a head shop. The evolution
The yuzu hits immediately and stays loud in the opening, sharp and almost metallic against the softer bergamot underneath. The mimosa starts arriving early too, powdery and yellow, like pollen drifting through sunlight. Tuberose pushes in next, creamy and substantial, while the green tea keeps the whole thing from going too dense. As the composition settles, the clove takes over. It's not subtle, warm, spiced, almost like a chai edge. The ylang-ylang and linden blossom bloom underneath it, adding a soapy floral lift that keeps the base from feeling heavy. Later in the wear, the amber and patchouli settle into a low hum, warm and resinous, with traces of rose still threading through the drydown. The evolution from bright citrus to soft spice to warm resin is gradual and steady, each phase announcing itself without crowding the others.
