The beginning
Faizal Privée calls this a tribute to the golden age of French perfumery, and the composition reads exactly that way. Chypre Iris Regale is a deeply personal interpretation of the classic chypre structure, the one built on oakmoss, labdanum, and a floral heart, refined through Privée's own experience and pursuit of something rare. At its center sits one of the most expensive materials in modern perfumery: an iris extract with 80% irones content, the aromatic compound that gives orris its distinctive presence. Violet absolute adds depth alongside it, contributing a green-purple shading that lifts the iris out of its usual monochrome. French cypress anchors the green facet with a dry, resinous clarity. Released in 2025, this is a chypre that refuses to treat the genre as a relic.
The classical chypre pyramid runs citrus top, floral heart, mossy-woody base, and most modern interpretations either soften the structure or bury the oakmoss under sweetness. Privée takes the architecture seriously. He loads the heart with multiple iris materials, working with extracts that prioritize richness and concentration, and lets the violet absolute add a green-purple depth that standard violet notes can't reach. Oakmoss appears in both the top and base, not as an accent but as architecture. The result is a chypre that feels structurally honest, a composition that trusts its own bones.
The evolution
The first spray hits with bergamot and neroli bright enough to cut through a room, but the oakmoss is already there underneath, anchoring everything before the citrus has finished speaking. French cypress adds a dry, resinous green that sharpens the citrus rather than softening it. Within fifteen minutes the iris takes over, and this is where the fragrance becomes something else entirely. The 80% irones content gives the heart a suede-like density, almost the texture of pressed powder turned into something richer, while violet absolute layers in a dusty, almost mineral purple. The iris phase dominates the composition, holding its character with remarkable persistence through the middle hours. As the composition settles, cocoa and Indian oud emerge from the base, and the drydown shifts from powdered floral to something warmer, slightly bitter, with milk and musk softening the edges.
Cultural impact
Luca Turin described the iris here as having an extraordinary suede-leather quality, and wearers consistently note it's 80-90% iris in practice, closer to a soliflore than a traditional chypre. That's the tension: classical chypre structure in the pyramid, near-iris purity in the wear. Privée builds with the discipline of the old guard but loads the formula with materials that belong to the current moment of niche perfumery. The violet absolute, the rare iris extract, the careful balancing of oakmoss across top and base all point to a perfumer working at the upper end of what the chypre genre can still hold.
