The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ex Nihilo burst onto the Paris fragrance scene in 2013 with a simple premise: give perfumers total creative freedom. That ethos produced Fleur Narcotique in 2014, a modern rose overdose that became an instant reference point for lovers of bold floral compositions. A decade later, the house asked perfumer Quentin Bisch to revisit the concept with a singular focus. The result is Fleur Narcotique Signature Rose De Mai, a fragrance that takes the original's rose-forward character and distills it around a single bloom: May Rose from Grasse, celebrated as the queen of French florals. This is not a limited edition or a flank. It is a deliberate refinement, built to showcase what a rose absolute can do when placed at the absolute center of a formula. Bisch brings his modern sensibility to the project, balancing opulence with restraint in a way that feels deeply considered rather than merely abundant.
The choice to center Rose de Mai reflects Ex Nihilo's broader philosophy of olfactory extremes. May Rose, harvested in Grasse during a brief window each spring, carries a richness that lesser rose materials cannot replicate. Bisch treats this material with evident respect, pairing it with notes that amplify rather than compete with its character. Lychee and peach in the opening serve a specific purpose: they introduce a contemporary fruitiness that prevents the rose from reading as classical or retrograde. Peony, jasmine, and orange blossom extend the floral vocabulary without fragmenting the central theme.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with lychee and bergamot, a sparkling combination that announces itself with confidence and clarity. Peach arrives within the first minutes, softening the citrus bite and introducing a tender sweetness that previews the floral heart without rushing toward it. This fruit-forward opening is deliberate. It sets a modern tone while creating contrast for the rose that follows. As the heart develops, peony and jasmine layer around the May Rose, adding body and complexity. Orange blossom contributes a clean, luminous quality that elevates the entire floral structure. By the time the fragrance settles into its dry down, woody notes have appeared to provide architectural support. Moss introduces an earthy dimension, and musk creates a lingering warmth that stays close to the skin for hours. The overall arc moves from bright and fruity to lush and floral to quietly warm, a progression that works across a full day of wear.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 arrival, Signature Rose de Mai has become a reference point for contemporary rose fragrances, praised for balancing a juicy fruit opening with a pure May Rose heart. Wearers note its ability to feel fresh enough for daytime yet sophisticated for evening events, positioning it as a versatile staple in the modern perfume wardrobe and cementing Ex Nihilo’s reputation for daring, yet elegant, reinterpretations of classic accords.
