The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Escada Sport Feeling Free landed in 1996 as part of Escada's Sport line, designed to translate runway energy into everyday wear. Perfumer Jean-Pierre Béthouart was tasked with capturing unrestricted movement and bright optimism in scent form. The Sport line spoke to the brand's belief that energy and elegance could coexist without friction. Béthouart built this around a citrus-tropical opening softened by herbal lavender, anchored by florals, and finished with warm woods and resins. The result was a fragrance that felt like a clear morning: clean, invigorating, and uncomplicated.
The note structure reflects a philosophy of balance: tropical brightness upfront, floral freshness at the centre, and warm, comforting depth at the base. Passion fruit and bergamot create an immediate, accessible opening. Lavender tempers the tropical sweetness, keeping the scent grounded and sporty rather than frivolous. Freesia and hyacinth provide a clean, garden-like heart that feels effortless. Sandalwood, myrrh, and amber in the drydown ensure the fragrance settles comfortably and lasts, because a sport scent that fades too quickly fails the brief of feeling free all day.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a burst of bergamot and passion fruit that feels immediately tropical and bright. Lavender arrives quickly, cooling down the sweetness and lending a sporty herbal edge. Within twenty minutes, the heart takes over as freesia and hyacinth bring crisp, green florals to the foreground. Lily and rose deepen the petal quality without adding weight. As the hours pass, sandalwood emerges with its creamy, woody warmth, myrrh adds a subtle resinous glow, and amber weaves everything into a soft, lasting trail that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 1996 debut, Feeling Free has maintained a niche following among those who appreciate a fresh, unisex profile that feels contemporary despite its age. Wearers often cite its balanced blend of citrus‑lavender freshness and warm woody drydown as a timeless choice for spring‑summer wardrobes, and it continues to appear in discussions of classic 90s sport‑inspired fragrances.
