The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shunjun / 逡巡 draws its name from the Japanese word carried directly into the fragrance's official description, a dream glimpsed at the beginning of autumn, rough around the edges, but worth remembering. Takashi Sato composed it for ERAM / エラム, and the concept maps precisely onto that suspended hour when summer still lingers in the air but the light has already changed. The opening is a bright green shock of pine needles and leaves, cut with a sharp thread of lemon that feels like the first cool breath drawn before the season fully commits. That crisp top accord settles quickly into something warmer and more resinous, the pine softening from a needle-fresh crackle into a quieter, woody hum.
The interesting choice here is restraint. Where many green-woody compositions shout, Shunjun whispers. Sato stacks lemon and pine needle at the top for that outdoor clarity, but the green notes underneath keep it grounded, earthy rather than synthetic. Then sage enters the heart alongside magnolia and lily of the valley, and the composition softens into something more floral and herbal than you'd expect from a woody. It's a structure that balances freshness with quiet warmth, built for the kind of person who notices temperature changes before anyone else in the room.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are pure outdoor clarity, pine needles cracking underfoot, lemon zest bright against green leaves, almost eucalyptus-adjacent in its snap. There's something almost medicinal about the opening, not sharp, just alert. Then the heart arrives and the temperature shifts. Magnolia's creamy softness rounds out the lemon's edge. Lily of the valley adds that dewy, almost translucent sweetness, and sage grounds everything with its dry, herbal warmth. It's a quieter phase, the scent of walking slower. By the two-hour mark, the woods take over. Patchouli settles in with its earthy depth, sandalwood gives it a creamy, almost milky backbone, and white musk keeps everything hovering just above the skin. What lingers past four hours is a soft, warm, woody musk, clean but with that unmistakable pine-and-patchouli signature. On fabric the next morning, it's all sandalwood and sage, the green long gone, the lemon just a memory. It doesn't announce itself and it doesn't try to. It just stays.
Cultural impact
Shunjun / 逡巡 arrived in 2024 as part of ERAM / エラム's first wave of releases, a line currently being marketed by POLA Orbis Holdings Inc. The kanji 逡巡 anchors the fragrance's identity, and the official Japanese description frames the scent as a dream seen at the start of autumn, imperfect, a little frayed, but worth holding onto. That framing is central to what the composition does on skin. The opening is brisk and green, pine needles and leaves sharpened by lemon, the kind of olfactory snapshot you get walking through a park in early September when the air turns at the edges.
