The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Every great house has its signature. For Emanuel Ungaro, that signature is rose, introduced in 1983 with Diva, a rich floral that captured the era's appetite for opulent femininity. Thirty-four years later, La Diva Mon Amour arrives as a love letter to that legacy, not a replacement. The 2017 launch draws its name from the language of adoration: my love, the diva. Paris, spring, the feeling of being in love, these are the inspirations. The idea wasn't to recreate Diva's power. It was to translate that same devotion into something younger, more accessible, and decidedly more fun.
What makes La Diva Mon Amour interesting is how it handles the transition from mother to daughter. Where Diva commands reverence, this version asks for affection. The sweet-fruity opening is deliberately approachable, raspberry, blackcurrant, and mandarin creating a cocktail that feels modern and youthful without losing the house's sense of occasion. The licorice in the heart is the quiet rebel here. Subtle enough not to dominate, but present enough to remind you this isn't a straightforward floral. It's the Ungaro signature, a hint of something unexpected that stops the sweetness from becoming predictable. The result is a fragrance that wears its accessibility as confidence, not compromise.
The evolution
The opening arrives quick and bright, berries first, mandarin following, that synthetic edge lending a polished, almost effervescent quality. It smells like something expensive and happy. The raspberry doesn't tease; it delivers. As the fragrance develops, the heart takes center stage. Bulgarian rose steps forward with its classic, powder-soft presence. The freesia keeps things airy. And there, just beneath, the licorice makes its move. Not aggressive. Not anise-black. Just a whisper of something different that adds depth without weight. The drydown is warm and skin-close. Musk and tonka bean settle in, cushioned by Peru balsam's sweet resin. The projection softens into something intimate, present for those nearby, invisible to the rest of the room. The final stretch of wear becomes a cozy, skin-hugging warmth that lingers like a memory of perfume rather than perfume itself.
Cultural impact
La Diva Mon Amour targets a different woman than its predecessor. Where Diva spoke to couture confidence, this version speaks to a more joyful sensibility, someone who values elegance without formality. The sweet-fruity character makes it approachable without sacrificing sophistication. It offers an accessible interpretation of the house's heritage, presenting Ungaro's signature rose in a context that feels contemporary while honoring the brand's roots.
