The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Untold Absolu arrives in 2024 as a new expression within Elizabeth Arden's Untold franchise, taking the collection's 'sensual floral' identity and turning up the volume. Perfumer Clément Gavarry built the composition around absolutes rather than standard extracts: jasmine absolute, French narcissus absolute, and vanilla absolute. That choice shapes the character of the fragrance in a distinctive way. The brief seems to have been simple: make it warmer, make it deeper, make it stay.
The use of multiple absolutes is the structural choice that makes Untold Absolu work. Jasmine and narcissus absolutes bring botanical depth and character, they're darker, more resinous in their expression. Combined with vanilla absolutes, the base achieves a warmth that feels creamy and intimate. Cashmere wood appears in the drydown, providing woody softness without the heaviness of sandalwood or the sharpness of oud. The ginger in the top isn't there for warmth, it's there to cut. It keeps the fruit honest, prevents the composition from sliding into sweetness overload.
The evolution
The opening is bright and slightly sharp, red plum and black raspberry with Italian bergamot providing citrus sparkle, then ginger arrives and asserts itself. That ginger lingers before it softens into the heart. The transition isn't dramatic; the florals simply grow around the fruit, weaving through it rather than replacing it. Jasmine absolute and rose water take over, with French narcissus absolute adding an earthy, slightly bitter undertone that keeps the sweetness grounded. By hour two, you're in the drydown: cashmere woods, Tahitian vanilla bourbon. The drydown has a lingering presence, warm and intimate in its expression.
Cultural impact
Untold Absolu fits Elizabeth Arden's philosophy of approachable luxury, featuring rich floral compositions that remain within reach. The inclusion of absolutes suggests a thoughtful approach to fragrance crafting that balances complexity with accessibility.
