The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Floral Sandalwood entered the Dossier library as a composition built around clarity, both in formula and in intent. This particular fragrance draws clear inspiration from a celebrated iris-and-sandalwood reference point, reinterpreted through Dossier's direct-to-consumer approach. The goal was straightforward: deliver that creamy, powdery, wood-warmed feeling without industry markup. Pear and tangerine at the top, jasmine and orris at the heart, sandalwood and amber holding the base. Every ingredient listed, every note accounted for, no hidden costs or proprietary mysteries. The opening is bright but never sharp, with the pear's soft, fleshy sweetness rounded by tangerine's citrus sparkle.
What makes this composition interesting is the conversation between amyris and orris root at its center. Amyris carries a creamy, slightly balsamic warmth that softens the sharper edges of the orris. Orris itself brings a powdery, almost suede-like texture that gives the heart of this fragrance its distinctive skin-like quality, a dry, rooty softness that recalls fresh linen or the cool interior of a vintage dressing room. The two materials meet in a way that feels less like a blend and more like a dialogue, with each one pulling the other into unexpected territory.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are the fruitiest this fragrance gets. Pear gives way to tangerine, and violet threads underneath like a whisper of something sweet and slightly floral. That sweetness peaks early, then steps back as the orris and amyris take hold. By the 30-minute mark, the scent shifts into something noticeably powdery, like the inside of a compact or clean laundry left to dry in afternoon sun. Jasmine makes a brief appearance, adding a clean, almost soapy brightness that keeps things from feeling too dense. From hour two onward, the sandalwood and vetiver settle in, the vetiver adding a faint earthy coolness that grounds the warmer wood beneath. The musk underneath creates a soft, skin-warming effect that lasts through the 4-6 hour range, never projecting aggressively but always present, the kind of scent you catch when you move your wrist or turn your neck.
Cultural impact
Floral Sandalwood occupies a specific corner of the fragrance world: the one where iris-and-sandalwood compositions, long considered a benchmark of refined perfumery, become accessible without losing their essential character. This particular scent fits that ethos cleanly, delivering a well-known formula structure with clear, readable execution. The composition doesn't reinvent the wheel, nor does it try to. Instead, it offers a transparent take on a beloved structure, one that lets the materials do the talking.
