The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dolce&Gabbana founded their house in Milan in 1985, building an identity around bold tailoring and vivid prints that celebrated Southern Italy. Their fragrance portfolio translates that same attitude into scent, favoring warmth, sensuality, and unapologetic richness. The One Gold arrived in 2021 from perfumer Violaine Collas, who structured the fragrance around plum and vanilla with patchouli anchoring the base. The composition leans into warmth and sweetness, creating a richer, more indulgent interpretation than some might expect from the house.
The note structure pairs plum with vanilla for sweetness, pink pepper with patchouli for depth, and white musk for softness. Lily of the valley functions as a balancing agent, its green freshness preventing the heart from becoming too dense. The pairing of jammy plum and creamy vanilla creates an edible quality, while patchouli keeps the sweetness from feeling lightweight. This deliberate contrast between warmth and freshness defines the fragrance's character.
The evolution
The opening showcases plum with mandarin brightness and pink pepper spice, creating an immediate fruity-spicy impression. The heart develops into rose and jasmine florals, with lily of the valley adding a clean, green freshness that tempers the richness. The drydown reveals patchouli's earthy depth, vanilla's creamy warmth, and white musk's lingering softness. This arc moves from bright fruit through lush florals into a warm, grounded base that persists on skin for hours.
Cultural impact
The One Gold occupies a particular corner of the D&G lineup, one that leans into warmth and sweetness without the edge of other flankers in the collection. It wears well in cooler months and reads as sophisticated rather than juvenile. The fragrance draws from the house's signature approach to sensuality while charting its own territory, prioritizing depth and presence over brightness or sharpness. Those who gravitate toward it tend to appreciate how it conveys luxury without shouting, warmth without sacrificing elegance.
