The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Divine was founded in 1986 on France's Emerald Coast, a house built on the belief that scent captures memory and place. Perfumer Serge de Oliveira, drawing on his Robertet background, conceived Divine l'été Narguilé in 2022 as part of the house's Limited Summer Edition, seeking to bottle the feeling of a breezy afternoon by the sea. Working with the bright citrus and soft florals native to that coastal landscape, he crafted an opening that feels both immediate and ephemeral, like sunlight through thin curtains.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of balance: bright opening notes that invite, a heart that adds depth without overwhelming, and a base that grounds the entire composition in warmth. Freesia and rose were chosen for their ability to soften lemon's sharpness, while ginger, clove, and cinnamon create a bridge between the delicate florals and the rich drydown. Patchouli, sandalwood, tobacco, and tonka bean complete the picture with a woody warmth that suggests late-summer evenings by the water. The combination reads as cohesive rather than complex, each note serving the overall mood rather than demanding attention.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with freesia and rose softened by lemon, a combination that evokes the immediacy of a summer garden in full bloom. As the opening fades over the first hour, ginger arrives in the heart to add a gentle spiced quality, with clove and cinnamon following to deepen the composition without heaviness. By the third hour, patchouli and sandalwood anchor the scent in warm woodiness, while tobacco and tonka bean introduce a quietly smoky sweetness that lingers long after the florals have vanished. The progression feels natural, each stage emerging from the one before it.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 launch, Divine l’été Narguilé has resonated with a generation seeking bright, uplifting scents that capture the essence of a French coastal summer. Its blend of lemon, freesia, and rose evokes memories of seaside picnics, while the warm spice heart adds depth that appeals to both casual wearers and fragrance enthusiasts. Social media posts frequently pair the perfume with images of garden parties and outdoor festivals, reinforcing its association with warm weather gatherings. Retailers report increased demand during late spring, and the scent has been featured in several lifestyle blogs as a go‑to summer fragrance, highlighting its role in shaping seasonal perfume trends.
