The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
D was composed in 2003. Violet leaf and mandarin blossom open crisp and alive, a bright and green introduction that sets an immediate tone. The warm floral heart follows, layered with ylang-ylang and jasmine, bringing depth and richness to the composition. Cedar and patchouli anchor the base, adding woody depth and earthy warmth that gives the fragrance its foundation. The structure moves from a cool, fresh opening through a warmer middle section to a grounded finish, creating a cohesive progression that feels natural rather than forced. The overall effect is one of balance and presence.
The note structure here earns attention through contrast. Violet leaf is cool, almost green, with a slight ozonic edge, that smell of crushed stems and morning air. Litchi brings something fruitier, softer, without tipping into sweetness. Together they open wider than either would alone. The heart layers ylang-ylang (warm, tropical, almost heady) against nutmeg and black pepper (spice that arrives sideways, not aggressively). Ylang-ylang and jasmine absolute create a lush floral presence, while the spices add unexpected complexity.
The evolution
The opening hits crisp and bright, violet leaf cuts clean through, mandarin blossom adds a flash of citrus blossom, and litchi softens the edges just enough. In that first hour, everything feels sharp and defined. The florals swell as time passes. Ylang-ylang takes over, jasmine absolute follows, and the cool green notes evolve into something warmer and rounder. Pepper and nutmeg settle into the composition like background music, present but not dominant. The base arrives after a few hours and stays. Cedar works alongside sandalwood and patchouli, with sandalwood adding cream and patchouli adding earthy depth that keeps the whole thing from becoming too polished. The result is a fragrance that remains close to the skin, present without being overpowering.
Cultural impact
D offers a different proposition. Woody depth with a cool opening, warmth that doesn't apologize, a drydown that stays close rather than announcing itself. Rather than following the dominant trends of its era, D provided something more grounded. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate a structured approach to scent, where each phase of the fragrance has room to develop fully before the next takes over.
