The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Crabtree & Evelyn collaborated with India Hicks to create a fragrance that captures island life as she lives it. Island Living launched in 2007, translating a particular aesthetic into scent: unhurried, sun-drenched, rooted in botanical beauty. Spider Lily anchors the range, pulling the concept away from generic tropical and into something stranger, more specific. The flower itself carries an unusual presence in the fragrance world, offering a distinctive character that adds depth and intrigue. That edge gives the fragrance its character, making it stand apart from more straightforward tropical offerings.
The pairing of night-blooming jasmine with passion fruit creates an unexpectedly rich tropical heart. Neither note dominates; they deepen each other instead, the jasmine's white floral sweetness gaining weight from the fruit's tart exoticism. Spider lily, the unusual named ingredient, sits quietly in this mix, not announcing itself but adding an undercurrent of something nocturnal. At the base, driftwood and tolu balsam shift the energy from bright to grounded. The freshness doesn't disappear so much as settle, becoming mineral and warm rather than sharp and aquatic. The result is a fragrance that starts almost ephemeral, then slowly becomes something you wear close to the skin.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, citrus brightness from bergamot and mandarin, with the aquatic note reading as clean sea salt. Within minutes, the composition softens, the sea breeze note giving way to something rounder. The heart unfolds gradually over the first hour. Night-blooming jasmine arrives with its characteristic indolic sweetness, tempered by passion fruit that keeps things tropical without crossing into candy. Spider lily lingers in the background, not announcing itself but adding complexity. As the fragrance develops, the drydown emerges and driftwood takes center stage, bringing mineral warmth and a sense of grounding. Plum adds quiet fruitiness that prevents the composition from becoming too austere, while tolu balsam provides resinous depth and a soft, lingering sweetness.
Cultural impact
Spider Lily occupies an interesting space: a discontinued tropical floral with genuine complexity. It carries a sensibility that rewards attention rather than simply announcing itself, with named ingredients and specific character. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate scents with depth, offering something that feels discovered rather than simply purchased. Its discontinuation has made it a collectible piece for fragrance enthusiasts who value unusual floral compositions with staying power.
