The beginning
CH Beasts arrived in 2020 as a limited flanker to Carolina Herrera's CH Men line, a scent that takes the original's playbook and pushes it somewhere rougher. The name says it all: not domesticated, not quite wild, but something with teeth. Perfumer Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann built this around a tension between cool and warm, fresh and resinous, the kind of contrast that makes a flanker worth making. It wasn't positioned as a replacement. It was positioned as an alternative for someone who wanted CH Men but louder, or maybe just more honest about what a masculine fragrance can be.
The note structure here is unusual for a masculine flanker. Most go fresh-at-top, sweet-at-base with nothing in between. CH Beasts inserts aquatic notes as the heart, not the typical marine or ozonic drowning pool, but something cooler, almost mineral. Balsam fir and violet leaf support that middle ground, keeping it green without going forest. Then the base delivers cashmere wood and bourbon vanilla together, which is the real decision: warm without being gourmand, creamy without being sweet. Labdanum adds a resinous finish that keeps everything grounded long after the top notes fade.
The evolution
The opening hits first, juniper and black pepper with an angelica edge that arrives sharp and leaves quickly. Thirty minutes in, the water notes take over, but they're not the typical aquatic assault. Think the smell of cold air over a lake, not synthetic marine accord. The balsam fir shows up around the hour mark, grounding the water notes into something more physical, more green. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Cashmere wood arrives soft, then the bourbon vanilla layers in, not dessert-sweet, but warm and skin-adjacent. Labdanum lingers. On most skin types, this whole arc takes four to six hours. The vanilla holds closest to the skin after that, almost a skin scent the next morning.
Cultural impact
CH Beasts is a limited edition flanker, which means it was never meant to replace CH Men, it was meant to complement it. The "Beasts" naming is deliberate: this is the rougher, less polished version for someone who wants the CH Men identity without the sweetness. The aquatic-vanilla combination is unusual in masculine perfumery, where the typical move is either fresh-and-done or sweet-and-safe. CH Beasts splits the difference and commits to both. It's the kind of fragrance that rewards someone who pays attention to flankers rather than just grabbing the original.
