The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
ByBozo, the Paris-based niche house founded in 2020, set out to bottle fleeting memories. In 2021, perfumer Paul Emilien answered that call with Black Mafia, a unisex scent that channels a secretive, urban vibe. Drawing on the brand's philosophy of translating personal moments into olfactory dialogues, the composition opens with green notes for that first impression, builds through a coffee and tobacco heart, and settles into a woody and frankincense drydown. The result feels like a memory that refuses to fade, sensory and personal.
Black Mafia was designed around a specific mood rather than a specific season. The green notes opening gives the fragrance an immediate freshness that can cut through warmer weather, while the coffee and tobacco heart provide enough weight to perform in cooler conditions. Frankincense in the drydown brings an aromatic complexity that elevates the entire structure without making it heavy. Each note was chosen deliberately, placed where it could contribute to a coherent narrative arc rather than simply adding pleasant smell. The brand believes that fragrance is a form of conversation, and Black Mafia invites the wearer to bring their own story into the composition.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and aromatic, green notes like crushed leaves and bitter herbs asserting themselves immediately. Within the first fifteen minutes the heart begins to develop, dark roasted coffee and tobacco merging with woody depth to create something simultaneously intimate and grounded. This is not a loud phase, it is a quiet statement. The woody notes serve as a bridge, softening the edges of the coffee while preparing the space for what comes next. As the drydown takes over, frankincense arrives with smoky resinous weight, adding a contemplative dimension that feels spiritual rather than theatrical. The coffee note does not disappear, it deepens beneath the frankincense, and the tobacco remains present as an aromatic memory throughout. This is a fragrance that rewards patience, a slow unraveling that changes as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
Within niche circles, Black Mafia is often noted for its uncanny resemblance to Black Afgano, yet the greener moss opening gives it a distinct edge. Wearers praise its smoky coffee‑tobacco core, while some find the green top unexpected. Its unisex appeal lands it among collectors seeking a dark, aromatic story that feels both familiar and fresh.
