A house, in its own words
Kilian Hennessy was born into one of France's most illustrious dynasties, famous for producing fine cognac. But instead of joining the family business, he was drawn to the world of scent. After graduating from the Sorbonne, where he wrote a thesis on the semantics of odors, he trained with some of the greatest noses in perfumery. He felt the industry had lost its soul to mass marketing and wanted to restore perfume to its late 19th-century pedestal, when it was truly a form of art. In 2007, he launched his own house, By Kilian, with a collection that immediately declared his intentions. The perfumes were complex, the names were daring, and the packaging was unapologetically luxurious. His vision was to create a brand that respected both the planet and the traditions of fine craftsmanship. This approach resonated deeply with fragrance lovers looking for something more than a disposable product. The brand's rapid success caught the eye of industry giants, and in 2016, it was acquired by The Estée Lauder Companies, giving it the global reach to match its founder's grand ambitions.
At its heart, By Kilian's philosophy is about creating true 'eco-luxe' objects of desire. Kilian Hennessy believes a great perfume bottle should be something you keep for a lifetime, not something you throw away. This is why every bottle is designed to be refilled and treasured. This commitment to sustainability is paired with a belief in perfume's narrative power. Each fragrance isn't just a collection of notes; it's a story, often a provocative one hinted at by names like 'Good girl gone Bad' or 'Voulez-vous coucher avec Moi'. The house views perfume as an invisible shield and a weapon of seduction, a personal statement that completes one's identity. They don't follow trends; they create scents that aim for a timeless elegance and a powerful emotional response.
