The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything. Bad boys are no good, but good boys are no fun, a proverb about the impossible calculus of desire, turned into something you can wear. Kilian Hennessy built his house on provocative naming, and this 2018 release is no exception. Part of the 'My Kind of Love' collection at Sephora, the line explored flavors of desire, some playful, some honest about what we actually reach for when we reach for someone. Alberto Morillas translated that tension into scent: a bright, fizzy opener that promises mischief, wrapped in spices that actually deliver warmth once the novelty settles.
The cola accord is the engine here, a synthetic construction that doesn't pretend to be natural. Lime sharpens it, nutmeg and cinnamon sweeten it, apple adds a soft fruit undertone that keeps the whole thing from reading as literal soft drink. Cedar and amberwood in the base are almost an afterthought, there to prevent the whole thing from disappearing too quickly. The structure is clever: an opening that commands attention, a heart that rewards patience, a base that simply holds the door open.
The evolution
The first spray is all fizz and flash. Lime and carbonated sweetness hit at once, that sharp, almost stinging brightness of a cola beverage poured over ice. It doesn't ease in. It arrives. Within ten minutes, the lime begins to recede, and something warmer takes its place. The spices emerge gradually, nutmeg first, then cinnamon, with apple hovering underneath like a whispered suggestion. By the thirty-minute mark, the composition has shifted entirely. The sugary cola note is still there, but it's softened, almost gourmand in its warmth. The drydown is cedar and amberwood: quiet, clean, lasting another six hours if you're patient. On fabric, it lingers longer than on skin, a faint sweet-wood trace that smells like the memory of wearing something interesting.
Cultural impact
The 'My Kind of Love' collection arrived in 2018 with an explicit brief: different flavors of desire, sold at Sephora alongside By Kilian's main line. This fragrance chose the provocative middle ground, the one that's honest about wanting both the thrill and the warmth, never quite settling.
